Properties of Solutions- Dialysis of a Mixture

Dialysis of a Mixture

Description: Two colored solutions are mixed together and placed in dialysis tubing. When the dialysis bag is put in a large beaker of water, the dialysis membrane will allow only one of the colored solutions to dialyze into the water in the surrounding beaker, while the other remains in the dialysis bag.

Hazard: Some

  • Acute toxicity hazard – oral, dermal, inhalation
  • Acute aquatic toxicity hazard
  • Specific organ toxicity hazard-repeated exposure

Effectiveness: Average

  • Results are clearly observable without guidance
  • Clear contrast of behavior of systems under observation
  • Time to results is high
  • Some connection from demo to course material
  • Moderate failure rate

Difficulty: Some

  • Simple manipulations for most to perform
  • Simple procedures
  • Demos in which display is used
  • Handle dialysis bag with care

Safety Precautions:

  • Eye protection required
  • Gloves required
  • Absorbent material on hand
  • Use UL approved three-prong plug and outlet required
  • Prevent release of reagents to the environment
