Coordination Compounds- Slow Formation of a Chloro Complex of Chromium (III) Ion

Slow Formation of a Chloro Complex of Chromium(III) Ion

Description A quantity of Hydrochloric acid is added to a sample of 0.01M Chromium (III) Nitrate. The mixture is heated and the solution changes color from a deep purple to a dark green in about 10 minutes of heating.

Cr(NO3)3(aq) + 3HCl(conc) + Δ → CrCl3(aq) + 3NO3-(aq) + 3H+(aq)
