Chromatography and Separation Techniques- Mass Spectrometer Simulation

Mass Spectrometer Simulation

Description: The influence of a magnet on the path of ferromagnetic bearings of different masses is shown.  The heaviest bearings are deflected the least. The lightest bearings are deflected the most. Non-ferrous spheres are not deflected at all. This is related to mass spectrometer operation.

Rating:

Hazard: Low

  • Strong magnet
  • Highly localized magnetic field

Effectiveness: Average

  • Results are observable with guidance
  • Good connection from demo to course material
  • Moderate reliability
  • Time to results is low

Difficulty: Low

  • Simple manipulations for most to perform
  • Simple procedures
  • Some practice recommended

Safety Precautions:

  • Avoid localized magnetic fields
  • Eye protection required
  • Do not expose pacemakers to strong magnetic field.
